Islet cell transplantation today

Abstract: Finally, the concept of islet cell or stem cell transplantation is most attractive, as it offers many perspectives: islet cell availability could become unlimited and islet or stem cells my be transplanted without life-long immunosuppressive treatment of the recipient, just to mention two of them.

“…We assume that the lack of a statistically significant reduction in HbA1c in our study probably resulted from the slower decline in C-peptide in the absence of immunosuppressive therapy, which is usually administered during islet cell transplant. 10 Similar results were achieved in a study by Bretzel and associates, 11 who also did not administer immunosuppressive therapy to their stem cell transplant patients with DM.…”

“…Neonatal wave of b cell apoptosis may be a trigger for b cell-directed autoimmunity [2]. Recent studies suggest that endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress plays an important role in the loss of b cells [3][4][5][6]. People with type 1 diabetes have normal exocrine pancreatic function, making b cell rather than whole organ transplantation an attractive option.…”
