Ischemic Perinatal Stroke: Summary of a Workshop Sponsored by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke

Abstract: Ischemic perinatal stroke is a disorder associated with significant long-term neurologic morbidity. With an estimated incidence of 1 in 2300 to 5000 births, stroke is more likely to occur in the perinatal period than at any time in childhood. The incidence of ischemic perinatal stroke ranks second only to that of strokes in the elderly population. Although ischemic perinatal stroke is a well-recognized disorder, many aspects remain to be studied. There is no consensus on its terminology, definition, or classif… Show more

“…were there. Only children with prenatal or perinatal stroke, which is defined by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke of the National Institutes of Health of the United States as occurring between the 20 th week of gestation and the 28 th postnatal day (Raju et al, 2007), were included in the study. Early brain injury participants were recruited through local and national support groups for childhood "hemiplegia" (hemiparesis).…”

“…Perinatal arterial ischemic stroke (PAIS) is a cerebrovascular event occurring during fetal or neonatal life, before 28 days after birth. It has an estimated incidence of one in 2300 to 5000 live births based on the consensus of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke [1]. Over 80% of cases involve the middle cerebral artery or its branches [2].…”

“…Perinatal stroke may be defined as an acute neurologic syndrome with chronic sequelae due to cerebral injury of vascular origin occurring between 20 weeks gestation and 28 days postnatal life, confirmed by neuroimaging or neuropathological studies [1]. These disorders include focal cerebral injury due to arterial ischemic stroke, cerebral venous thrombosis, and primary intracerebral hemorrhage.…”
