Nowadays, Ischemia Modified Albumin (IMA) has been regarded as an indicator for various maladies and complicated pregnancy in humans. Therefore, it is hypothesized that evaluation of the maternal serum IMA degrees can serve as an early detection of abortion in dairy cows. 252 Holstein cows' serum samples were taken both in the 2 nd and 6 th months of their pregnancy. Twenty-two cattle were selected as a positive control group among the non aborted ones. Furthermore, blood samples from 20 non-pregnant cows were taken to identify the effects of physiological changes of pregnancy. IMA and Ischemia Modified Albumin Rate (IMAR) were markedly higher (p<0.01); and albumin was markedly lower (p<0.01) in aborted cows and healthy-pregnant cows compared with non-pregnant cows in both months. In aborted cows, IMA, IMAR and Oxidative stress index (OSI) degrees were found to be more increased than healthy pregnancies both in 2 nd and 6 th months of pregnancy; however, there were statistically significant only at 6 th month (p<0.01). Total Oxidative Stress (TOS) levels were higher than healthy pregnancies. So, as a result of IMA which was caused by oxidative stress rising from hypoxia/ischemia could serve as an early bioindicator for miscarriage in cattle.

Objective Primary dysmenorrhea occurs due to abnormal levels of prostanoids, uterine contractions, and uterine blood flow. However, the reasons for pain in primary dysmenorrhea have not yet been clarified. We examined the blood flow alterations in patients with primary dysmenorrhea and determined the relationship between ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels, as an ischemia indicator, and primary dysmenorrhea. Methods In the present study, 37 patients who had primary dysmenorrhea and were in their luteal and menstrual phase of their menstrual cycles were included. Thirty individuals who had similar demographic characteristics, who were between 18 and 30 years old and did not have gynecologic disease were included as control individuals. Their uterine artery Doppler indices and serum IMA levels were measured. Results Menstrual phase plasma IMA levels were significantly higher than luteal phase IMA levels, both in the patient and in the control groups (p < 0.001). Although the menstrual phase IMA levels of patients were significantly higher than those of controls, luteal phase IMA levels were not significantly different between the two groups. Menstrual uterine artery pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI) of primary dysmenorrhea patients were significantly different when compared with luteal uterine artery PI and RI levels. There was a positive correlation between menstrual phase IMA and uterine artery PI and RI in the primary dysmenorrhea. Conclusion Ischemia plays an important role in the etiology of the pain, which is frequently observed in patients with primary dysmenorrhea. Ischemia-modified albumin levels are considered as an efficient marker to determine the severity of pain and to indicate ischemia in primary dysmenorrhea.

Increased arterial stiffness is strongly associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in dialysis patients. Ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) is a useful biomarker of cardiac ischemia. This study was aimed to explore the association between IMA and arterial stiffness in hemodialysis patients. An observational study was conducted with 120 hemodialysis patients. Clinical data and laboratory characteristics were collected. Arterial stiffness was evaluated by brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV). Hemodialysis patients had extensive arterial stiffness and high levels of IMA. Comparing to hemodialysis patients with normal baPWV, those with high baPWV had significantly higher levels of IMA (93.7 ± 8.6 versus 73.1 ± 10.7 Ku/L, P = 0.027). The multiple linear regression analysis showed that IMA was significantly associated with arterial stiffness in hemodialysis patients (β = 0.43, P < 0.001). Moreover, IMA, with a threshold value of 90.4 Ku/L, provided 77.4% sensitivity and 86.6% specificity for predicting arterial stiffness. Hemodialysis patients with arterial stiffness had high levels of IMA. IMA was a good predictive marker of arterial stiffness for hemodialysis patients.

Abstract: Our findings support the theory that possible oxidative stress, a more hypoxic environment and defective placentation lead to increased serum IMA concentrations. These findings may help to shed light on the complicated pathogenesis of early pregnancy loss.
