Is there a link between osteofibrous dysplasia and adamantinoma?

Abstract: Because of the relative frequency of osteofibrous dysplasia (OFD) and the gravity of adamantinoma, it is important to know whether there is a link between these two entities. A young boy had been followed from the age of 5 years for OFD of the right tibia. At the age of 10, biopsy performed because of pain, revealed OFD-like adamantinoma. Surgery was undertaken, with en bloc proximal tibial resection of 14 cm and reconstruction by free vascularized fibula and internal fixation. This observation illustrates the… Show more

“…2 Multiple biopsies can monitor any change in the tumour status. 12 In radiographs, areas of eccentric cortical lucency and expansion present as focal lucent areas or as multiple 'bubble' areas. 17 Osteofibrous dysplasia tends not to progress and is a precursor of adamantinoma, including cell transformation from mesenchymal to epithelial features.…”

“…1 The latter is of lower prevalence and affects mainly children younger than 10 years, 7 and resembles benign osteofibrous dysplasia. 6,12,13 This study reports a patient with early multiple recurrences of adamantinoma of the right tibia and late metastasis to the lung and ribs 13 years after the first surgical treatment.…”

“…Fibrous tissue is abundant in both, so anadamantinoma can remain masked if biopsy is taken from a single lesion site. 2 Precaution must be taken to take samples from lytic as well as dense regions.…”
