“…Intermittent raised levels of ANP were observed in healthy men, with peaks occurring every 9 min, and long-term oscillations with duration of 34 min. We had also previously observed intermittent raised levels of ANP in healthy men, and in patients with CCF, with peaks occurring every 6±10 min [12]. The present study showed a similar frequency of peaks in the peptides studied.…”

“…Plasma levels of c-terminal atrial natriuretic peptide (cANP) have been observed to be uneven and our previous work [11] has shown that increased levels occur transiently, with the periodicity of peaks and troughs approximately every 10±12 min. This pro®le is also maintained, and indeed exaggerated, in patients with CCF [11] and after cardiac transplantation [12]. Recently this observation has been extended to include c-terminal brain natriuretic peptide (cBNP) [13].…”

“…In our previous study on C‐ANP [6] we observed no changes in heart rate or right atrial pressure during the 90‐min sampling time to coincide with the ‘peaks’, even though an increase in right atrial wall stress has been identified as the main stimulus of ANP secretion [15]. Neural control has been excluded by studies in the denervated heart [16], and so the exact mechanism behind the ‘peaks’ remains obscure.…”

“…The mechanism of synthesis and secretion of ANP and BNP is not fully understood, but the larger amplitude of oscillations in patients with CHF might be due to a more intense synthesis of ANP and BNP as found in heart failure [18,28], to different modulation of the secretion of pressure hormones being augmented in heart failure [29,30] and\or to differences in cardiac innervation [31]. It is believed that ANP is stored in granules mainly in the atrium and that the secretion\production is largely regulated by a change in atrial transmural pressure, whereas BNP is constitutively released in the ventricle [32], although ANP and BNP have been found to coexist in the same granules in the atrium and to a lesser extent in the ventricle [33].…”
