“…This might be explained by the fact that climate change has already impacted local biodiversity in this part of the Mediterranean Sea, even leading to local extinctions (Albano et al, 2021;Rilov, 2016) (Katsanevakis, Coll, et al, 2020). As protected areas might also experience differentiated climatic conditions across their surface (Kyprioti et al, 2021), it is essential to monitor altering physicochemical conditions and changes in biodiversity to reduce risk to conservation objectives. Under the EU biodiversity strategy for 2030, at least 30% of the European seas should be protected, with 10% being under strict protection.…”

“…Still, expanding marine protected areas following a 4D approach, that is, setting priority networks of vertical coherence able to satisfy both climatic and biodiversity stability across depth zones, could serve as a first step towards directing conservation efficiency. Indeed, in a recent study Kyprioti et al (2021) found that the current network of marine protected areas in the region is currently subjected to low climatic stability, and climate driven redistribution of biodiversity would also lead to limited biotic community stability. Comparing and combining species-independent approaches, such as the one used here to identify climatic refugia, with species distribution current and future projections might capture different climatic sensitivities.…”

“…Accounting for the redistribution of biodiversity, both in depth and over time, as a response to climate change could thus serve as an effective approach to help incorporate climate change in the prioritization of areas for conservation. The necessity of identifying sites that will most probably maintain their present climatic conditions, allowing local biota to sustain healthy populations over time, is also increasingly acknowledged (Katsanevakis et al, 2020; Kyprioti et al, 2021). Climate temporal stability and spatial heterogeneity, and their effects on the distribution of the biota are two key aspects to consider in climate‐effective protected area design (Doxa et al, 2022).…”
