Is the Boone-Indicator Applicable? – Evidence from a Combined Data Set of German Manufacturing Enterprises

Abstract: SummaryBoone (2008a) proposes a new competition measure based on Relative Profit Differences (RPD) that, from its theoretical properties, proves to be more robust than the Lerner-Index. However, the proof of the empirical practicability and robustness of the Boone-Indicator is missing. To fill this gap, we use a rich, newly built, data set for German manufacturing enterprises and test its empirical validity using cartel cases. Since all of the identified cartels significantly restricted market competition, we … Show more

“…Second, unlike van Leuvensteijn et al (2013), we use the traditional Lerner index (Lerner, 1934) as a competition measure, which is popular in the empirical literature. Indeed, although the Boone index has a better theoretical foundation (see, e.g., Boone, 2008;Delis, 2012), the empirical robustness of this indicator remains unclear (Schiersch and Schmidt-Ehmcke, 2011). Finally, in the last part of the paper we control for the fact that rigidity in retail rates is certainly not only due to a lack of competition, but may also be due to credit risk factors and banks' risk aversion.…”

“…We prefer the Lerner Index to the H-Statistic since Shaffer and Spierdijk (2015) expose flaws in the H-Statistic, while Schiersch and Schmidt-Ehmke (2011) highlight that the Boone Indicator suffers from empirical practicability and validity when measuring competition.…”
