Cet article examine comment les femmes mariées en fonction de leur niveau d’étude s’engagent à faire des choix professionnels. Nous utilisons les données d’une enquête portant sur le Cameroun et l’approche en deux étapes de Heckit pour traiter le biais potentiel de sélection de l’échantillon dans les choix professionnels. Les résultats montrent que, bien que les femmes mariées soient plus susceptibles de s’engager sur le marché du travail par rapport aux femmes non mariées, le type d’emploi est à considérer. Ainsi, contrairement aux femmes non mariées, l’éducation accorde une variété plus réduite de choix professionnels aux femmes mariées. Tandis que l’éducation accroît la probabilité de choisir seulement les activités commerciales et non qualifiées chez les femmes mariées, elle accroît la probabilité de choisir le travail de bureau, le commerce, les services et les activités non qualifiées chez les femmes non mariées. Ces résultats suggèrent que, par rapport aux femmes non mariées, les femmes mariées instruites ont tendance à choisir un nombre réduit d’activités professionnelles qui leur offrent une plus grande flexibilité dans la gestion des activités domestiques et sur le marché – une observation qui est plus attribuable à la nécessité qu’à l’opportunité.
