Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication is seen as one of the main enabling technologies for automated vehicles. Collective perception is especially promising, as it allows connected traffic participants to “see through the eyes of others” by sharing sensor-detected objects via V2X communication. Its benefit is typically assessed in terms of the increased object update rate, redundancy, and awareness. To determine the safety improvement thanks to collective perception, the authors introduce new metrics, which quantify the environmental risk awareness of the traffic participants. The performance of the V2X service is then analyzed with the help of the test platform TEPLITS, using real traffic traces from German highways, amounting to over 100 h of total driving time. The results in the considered scenarios clearly show that collective perception not only contributes to the accuracy and integrity of the vehicles’ environmental perception, but also that a V2X market penetration of at least 25% is necessary to increase traffic safety from a “risk of serious traffic accidents” to a “residual hypothetical risk of collisions without minor injuries” for traffic participants equipped with non-redundant 360° sensor systems. These results support the ongoing worldwide standardization efforts of the collective perception service.

The emergence of connected automated vehicles and advanced V2X applications and services can challenge the scalability of vehicular networks in the future. This challenge requires solutions to reduce and control the communication channel load beyond the traditional congestion control protocols proposed to date. In this paper, we propose and evaluate the use of V2X message compression to reduce the channel load and improve the scalability and reliability of future vehicular networks. Data compression has the potential to reduce the channel load consumed by each vehicle without reducing the amount of information transmitted. To analyze its potential, this paper evaluates the compression gain of three compression algorithms using standardized V2X messages for basic awareness (CAMs), cooperative perception (CPMs) and maneuver coordination (MCMs) extracted from standard-compliant prototypes. We demonstrate through network simulations that V2X message compression can reduce the channel load. In particular, the tested compression algorithms can reduce the channel load by up to 27% without reducing the amount of information transmitted. Reducing the channel load and the consequent interferences significantly improves the reliability of V2X communications. However, this study also emphasizes the need for high-speed compression and decompression modules capable to compress and decompress V2X messages in real time, especially under highly loaded scenarios.

Congestion control is a hot research topic according to the continuous increase of traffic density together with great mobility of cars. In this context, in this survey we present an overview about the different vehicle to vehicle (V2V) communication enablers by describing the difference between them performing better driving assistance together with efficient congestion control ensuring driving safety. New radio (NR) 5G is the heuristic enabler which provides scalability and reliability towards vehicular communication. Indeed, NR 5G is the best solution supporing the great increase of network density. 5G technology is expected to allow much advanced services and application with a huge capacity of data exchange. Congestion occurance impacts the quality of service of vehicular network, for this accurate quantification is required. In our analysis we consider channel busy rate CBR as indicator of network density. Channel load control is mondatory to overcome traffic jam which could be highlighted by different metrics. The connectivity between cars is modeled with a game theory framework considering a non cooperative vehicular mobility. Each vehicle adjusts its transmitted power in dynamic way taking into account the traffic density measured by channel busy rate (CBR). Consequently, we follow a theoretical modeling to determine the efficient allocated power ensuring awareness messages exchange without saturating the communication channel under the respect of a fixed threshold. Therefore, channel saturation control is investigated following a theoretical analysis exploiting game theory under the assumption of a non cooperative strategy. Each vehicle acts as a player presenting a specific driving behavior different to the other cars participating into the same scenario. The optimization framework is about determining the optimal allocated power for congestion minimization.
