Is Online Participation Distinct from Offline Participation? A Latent Class Analysis of Participation Types and Their Stratification

Abstract: The increased availability of the Internet has led to the emergence of new forms of political participation. Opinions differ, however, on whether this has led to a reinforcement of stratification patterns or to the political mobilization of new groups in society. To address this question, the authors conducted a latent class analysis of a U.S. representative sample that indicates that online activism is indeed a distinctive type of political participation. Analysis of the sociodemographic stratification of the… Show more

“…We note that our findings also show that, aside from age-based inequalities, new forms probably do not yet change the wellknown divides in participation mainly associated with resource-related determinants. This said, as the evidence remains mixed (Krueger, 2006;Schlozman et al, 2012;Oser et al, 2013;Feezell, 2016), and contextual factors may have an important role to play, the jury is still out on whether digital media will eventually be able to ameliorate participatory inequalities.…”

“…Future studies should pay particular attention into how citizens with different activist profiles and from different age groups may be combining different modes or forms in their repertoires of engagement (see e.g. Oser et al, 2013;Oser, 2016). Similarly, it is important to examine these processes dynamically, through longitudinal research designs, to observe the changing nature of repertoire adoption.…”

“…Many studies investigating online and offline participation show that online participation is a distinct type of participation [47]. People leveraging technology for participation are empirically shown to differ regarding age [3,47], gender, and education [25] from those participation via traditional and offline channels. In this research, we focus on computers and mobile phones as channels to communicate and interact with government.…”
