Is metal hyperaccumulation occurring in ultramafic vegetation of central and southern Mexico?

Abstract: In Mexico, ultramafic complexes are present in different regions from the northwest (Baja California Norte) to the southeast (Chiapas). In this paper, we present the results of the exploration of three ultramafic (serpentine) habitats in central and southern Mexico: Cuicatlán–Concepción Pápalo (Oaxaca), Tehuitzingo–Tecomatlán (Puebla), and San Juan de Otates (Guanajuato). Previous geology studies showed that these complexes are mainly made up of serpentinized peridotites. Soil analyses demonstrated typical ult… Show more

“…Ultramafic outcrops, ophiolites, and Ni‐laterite soils are documented in the region (Roberts and Irving, ; Lewis et al., ; Ortiz‐Hernández et al., ; Harlow et al., ; Hernández‐Quiroz et al., ). A few field expeditions have previously searched such areas for hyperaccumulators but found none (Reeves et al., ; Navarrete Gutiérrez et al., ).…”

“…This is mainly due to the existence of a reagent paper test that is only specific to nickel (based on dimethylglyoxime, it is clear that many territories remain to be prospected. It is also true that recent research, for example, in Mexico, has not detected new hyperaccumulator taxa (Navarrete Gutiérrez et al, 2018). On the contrary, the Central American zone has found new hyperaccumulator species of the genus Psychotria (McCartha et al, 2019).…”

“…The area is mainly covered by the "Lacandona" tropical evergreen rainforest, and dominated by rolling hills made up mainly of limestone sedimentary rocks (lutite, limonite) from the upper Cretaceous (Mesozoic) with overlapped layers of marine origin from the lower Tertiary (Cenozoic). Marls and clays could be found on the foot of the slopes and in alluvial areas (Müllerried 1957;Levy Tacher et al 2006;SGM 2006). Main soil types are Rendzinas, Gleysols and Litosols (INIFAP-CONABIO 1995;Mendoza-Vega and Messing 2005)..…”
