Is mean platelet volume a new activity criteria in Behçet's disease?

Abstract: The aim of this study was to assess mean platelet volume (MPV) and its relationship with disease activity in patients with Behçet's disease. Thirty-six patients with an age of 38.9 ± 11 (mean ± SD) years and 40 controls aged 36.5 ± 12 (mean ± SD) years were enrolled the study. Demographic data, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), MPV, clinical findings such as oral aphthae, genital aphthae, erythema nodosum, acne, central nervous system involvement, uveitis, arthritis and arthralgia… Show more

“…In the present study, MPV was significantly lower in patients with BD compared to controls. This is at variance with some previous reports, in which MPV was elevated in patients with BD compared to healthy controls . However, lower MPV has also been reported in patients with BD .…”

“…Three of these were excluded because they were duplicate studies. Thus, 14 articles met the inclusion criteria (Table , Figure ). Eleven studies evaluated MPV, seven studies NLR, three studies adinopectin levels, and three studies PLR levels in the BD and control groups (Table ).…”

“…Behçet’s disease can be classified as active and inactive diseases based on disease activity, and thrombosis occurs often in BD. Studies on MPV, NLR, and PLR in patients with BD in comparison with those in healthy controls, on the indices between active and inactive diseases, and between BD with and without thrombosis have reported controversial results . We performed the present meta‐analysis to overcome the limitations of individual studies and resolve inconsistencies .…”

“…Also, a reduced MPV has been found in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and systemic lupus erythematosus arthritis when compared to controls 28,29. A higher MPV in patients with active BD has also been reported 30. The role of the MPV in differentiation between BD and recurrent oral aphthous ulcers was also investigated, but no evidence for the effectiveness of the MPV in such differentiation could be obtained 23.…”
