Abstract:In the present study, we examined sexual knowledge, sexual behavior, and psychological adjustment of adolescents with blindness. The sample included 36 Dutch adolescents who are blind, 16 males and 20 females. Results of the interviews revealed no problems regarding sexual knowledge or psychological adjustment. Sexual behavior however, was more at risk. Adolescents with blindness had less sexual experiences and were older in having sexual experiences compared with youth without disabilities in the Netherlands.… Show more
“…Those living in institutions did not mention any sexual experience. Male and female adolescents confirmed the family's overprotection (12) . When comparing love and sex, some interviewed adolescents perceive that love can exist without sex and that sex can exist without love.…”

“…For example, blind individuals are characterized by having personalities that include qualities such as being introverted, passive, withdrawn and lacking social skills [21,22]. These are emotional characteristics that develop over time and are directly caused by a blind person's experience with the restrictions they face in the outside world.…”
Purpose. The purpose of this study was to determine the athletic identity (AI) of blind and able-bodied tandem cyclists and explore its relationship to selected variables. An additional objective of this study was to analyze the reliability of the seven-item Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS) for tandem cyclists. Methods. The participants (N = 50) completed measures of AI, variables characterizing their loss of vision (degree and time of loss) and variables characterizing their sports level (the number of hours of training per week and sports experience). Results. The AI level of able-bodied tandem captains is significantly higher than the level in visually impaired athletes. blind tandem cyclists were found to be a fairly homogeneous group according to AI. There were no differences in AI and the degree and time of vision loss, the number of hours of training per week and when a cycling license was received. Psychometric analysis showed that AIMS is a reliable and consistent research tool in the evaluation of AI of tandem cyclists. Conclusions. The findings suggest that there is a need to increase the involvement of blind cyclists in the sport as well as their responsibility for sports results.
“…Disabled people themselves have recounted numerous tales of exclusion and oppression [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. A lack of access to public transport, inadequate economic resources, physical inaccessibility, and perhaps most importantly, attitudinal barriers, especially among family, friends, caregivers and healthcare providers, colleagues, close acquaintances, and prospective mates have kept many disabled people from experiencing and expressing their own sexuality.…”

“…Despite changing views, some sexualities remain marginalized, both in the research literature and in life. Both straight women and lesbians, especially those with congenital-as opposed to acquireddisabilities, gay men, bisexuals, and racial/ethnic minorities continue to experience the most hostility and/or neglect [20][21][22][23][24][25][26][27]. This is because most disability research remains wedded to dominant heteronormative and ableist notions of gender and sexuality.…”

While the social model of disabled sexuality offers a fundamental and vitally important critique of ableist assumptions concerning disabled people's sexuality, it remains limited. This article offers a brief history and critical overview of the most recent scholarship emerging out of the social model of disabled sexuality; argues that the new scholarship, which is meant largely to challenge dominant ableist assumptions concerning disabled people's sexuality, actually serves to reinforce the heterosexual matrix; and provides both theoretical and practical means of transforming the future landscape of (dis/ abled) human sexualities. Keywords Ability Á Disability Á Sexuality Á Social model Binary oppositions between straight and gay, disabled and non-disabled are inaccurate and oppressive ideologies, which obscure the continuities of disability and sexuality. Tom Shakespeare [1] I think that disability is a breed on its own, neither masculine or feminine. Jazz [2] Sex and disability, disability and sex; the two words may seem incompatible. Practitioners, care-givers, family, friends, society-rooted in what Butler [3] has called the heterosexual matrix and what disability rights activists and scholars have called the medical model of disability-consider disabled people to be not only broken or damaged, but also incompetent, impotent, undesirable, or asexual. Their inability to perform gender and sexuality in a way that meets dominant societal expectations is seen as an intrinsic limitation, an 'unfortunate' but unavoidable consequence of inhabiting a disabled body.
