Is it the way they use it? Teachers, ICT and student achievement

Abstract: We provide evidence on whether ICT-related teaching practices affect student achievement. We use a unique student-teacher dataset containing variables on very specific uses of computer and ICT by teachers matched with data on national standardized tests for 10 th grade students. Our identification strategy relies on a within-student between-subject estimator and on a rich set of teacher's controls. We find that computer-based teaching methods increase student performance if they help the teacher to obtain mate… Show more

“…Consistent with this growing interest in both theories, this study has investigated the relationship between behavioral intention to use OSS among secondary school graduates from education systems that provide intensive OSS training and the following constructs: perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, autonomy, relatedness, and competence. Specifically, the combination of these two frameworks was adopted in order to: (1) explore the motivational determinants of student behavior towards OSS; and (2) propose a research model to analyze the effect of self-motivation factors in order to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between human motivation and technology acceptance.…”

“…Besides the obvious benefits of ICTs in education there is debate about the negative effects of the excessive use of ICT in face-to-face education (Fojtik, 2015;Comi, Gui, Origo, Pagani & Argentin, 2016). But, in distance education technology is one of the key concepts.…”

“…Gerick et al (2014) surveyed a number of studies and meta studies from both national and international contexts and concluded that while some studies show a positive relation between computer use and academic outcome, the overall conclusion is that the effect of computer use is dependent on the teaching methods and the contexts, and that there is still a lack of representative studies based on valid broad assessments of academic knowledge and skills (Gerick et al 2014, p. 221). Comi et al (2017) were able to show that specific teaching practices related to ICT were indeed better than others to improve students' achievement. The successful practices were: "aimed at increasing students' awareness of ICT use and at improving their navigation critical skills, developing students' ability to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant material and to access, locate, extract, evaluate and organize digital information" (Comi et al 2017, p.…”
