“…Several studies reported benefits for visco-supplementation after arthrocentesis (16,(27)(28)(29). HA may have a beneficial effect on inflammatory mediators in OA (30), but it is unclear whether arthrocentesis alone or in combination with HA or corticosteroids yields the best results with respect to function and quality of life (31). As compared with arthrocentesis alone, combined use of HA for treatment of OA (4) may improve TMJ function more rapidly.…”

“…Regarding the clinical problem, one study evaluated patients with arthralgia ( 22 ), two studies focused on osteoarthritis ( 13 , 23 ), one on internal derangement ( 24 ), one on Juvenile idiopathic arthritis ( 17 ), and the others observed TMDs with no specific disorder ( 20 , 21 ) ( Table 3 ). Among reviewed studies only 4 studies used the Wilkes classification criteria ( 13 , 20 , 21 , 23 ). All of these researches included patients with axis 1 group III for AC intervention.…”

“…Regarding to the therapeutic methods and types of treatment ( Table 4 ), three studies compared the use of HA with CS in their study groups ( 20 , 21 , 23 ), the others only investigated the effect of AC with CS compared to ringer lactate ( 13 , 20 , 21 ), or normal saline ( 22 , 23 ), or Vitamin B12 + physiological salt water ( 17 ), as a control medium. The follow-up period among the studies ranged from 1 month to 8 months.…”

“…This finding raised the question on the effectiveness of corticosteroids as intraarticular injection. Another study by Bouloux et al recently again showed no added effect of using corticosteroids or another agent, hyaluronic acid in arthrocentesis [198]. In cases of juvenile idiopathic arthritis, a study by Resnick et al showed that although intraarticular corticosteroid (triamcinolone hexacetonide) injection did reduce TMJ sinovitis pain, its efficacy for long-term inflammation and joint destruction control needs further studies.…”
