Background: In gaining knowledge and comprehension of neuroanatomy, medical students require not only memorizing the anatomical structures but also understanding the spatial relationships. Along with the cadaver prosection usage, we proposed an anatomy visualization learning (AVL) as possible modality to fulfill this need, yet this has to be proven. This study aimed to know whether AVL can improve student knowledge in neuroanatomy and give a positive perception to the student. Methods: A quantitative and qualitative studies were performed to the first-year medical students (n=46) of Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia who were randomly divided into two groups, an interventional (n=23) and a control (n=23) group. Both groups enrolled in the neuroanatomy learning module, with additional two sessions (two hours/session) of AVL using 3D anatomy visualization table for the intervention group. Quantitative study to know the knowledge improvement was done by comparing the pre-test, post-test and gain scores between groups. Student’s perception of the learning method was done using a questionnaire on a Likert scale. Qualitative study was done using open questions. Results: The median value of the pre-test score (8 [0-30] vs. 4 [0-42]; p=0.869) and the post-test scores (44 [30-82] vs. 40 [8-84]; p=0.068) between the interventional vs control group were not different. Nevertheless, the interventional group gained higher scores than the control group (41.6±18.06 vs. 29.8±20.47; CI 95%; p<0.05). Participants (the interventional group) had a positive perception about the AVL usage for neuroanatomy learning. Conclusion: AVL can be considered as a new approach modality for neuroanatomy learning.

Preserved cadaver is still chosen to be the main medium for anatomy learning. Conventional preserving solutions containing a high concentration of formalin change the cadaver's color, volume, and consistency. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) which has properties of antimicrobial and antiseptic activity is prevalently used as an additive for food preservation. This study aims to determine the preservation effect of EDTA in goat kidneys in a short period. Goat kidneys were cleaned, sliced on the Brodell’s line, and immersed in 30% formalin or 30% EDTA for one month, and fresh goat kidneys were used as the negative control. Changes in structure, color, and consistency of the kidnyes were observed by two independent observers, and the volume was measured before and after preservation. Formalin preservation exhibited good structure conservation with obvious decolorization and volume change. Preservation of the kidneys using EDTA showed comparable structure, color, consistency, and volume to the fresh one, indicating EDTA has a potency to be used as a mixture in preservative solution. In conclusion, EDTA alone preserves the structure, color, consistency, and volume of the goat kidneys for a short period.

Preservation of Goat Kidneys Using Low Concentration Formalin for Human Anatomy Learning

Background: Exposure to formaldehyde from a preserved cadaver can cause several health problems in students, lecturers, and laboratory technicians working in medical anatomy laboratories. These conditions include respiratory tract irritation and cancer due to acute and chronic exposure, respectively. Lowering the frequency of contact with formaldehyde from preserved organs helps to ensure the safety of students, lecturers, and laboratory technicians. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of low concentration formalin as a preservative solution for goat kidneys. The organ was selected due to its anatomical structure similarity to humans.Method: Goat kidneys with 50-60 ml of volume were collected, washed, immersed in preservative solution, and stored for two months. The samples were then divided into four groups, which were preserved with different formalin concentrations, namely 30%, 20%, 10%, and 5%. The preservation parameters, namely organ structure and integrity, color, springiness, odor, and mold growth were qualitatively described, while the kidney volume was quantitatively measured.Results: After the samples were preserved for two months, they were observed, and all groups showed similar characteristics. The kidneys preserved with 5% or 10% formalin showed equal volume before and after two months of preservation.Conclusion: Low concentration formalin has the same effectiveness in preserving goat kidneys as the high concentration. It also has the potential to be applied in human anatomy learning.
