Background Rickets is the most common non-communicable disease in pediatrics in developing countries, often observed in societies with strict vegetarian diets and not introduced to foods enriched in vitamin D. This poses a barrier to effective treatment, making it a chronic and often subclinical disease. Objective: This study aims to assess the prevalence of rickets among Saudi children and infants in Arar, Saudi Arabia, identify risk factors, and assess symptoms. Methodology: This is a cross- sectional study conducted among Saudi general population in Arar, Saudi Arabia. Adult participants completed a self-administrated questionnaire for their children concerning rickets. All data was entered and analyzed using SPSS 23 with using appropriate statistical methods for description and analysis. P-value less than 0.05 was considered for statistical significance Results: The study included 393 participants, 21.1% of them were males and 78.9% were females. 51.9% aged between 20- 30 years old. 27.3% of participants reported having a child diagnosed with rickets. Age of child at time of diagnosis was less than 12 months (63.4%), between 12- 24 months (31%) and more than 24 months (5.6%) of diagnosed children. Risk factors were identified as vitamin D deficiency at the time of diagnosis in 81.7%, vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy in 78.9%, preterm labor in 45.1% and artificial breastfeeding in 31% of diagnosed children. 91.5% of diagnosed children improved after adherence to treatment. Conclusion: Prevalence of rickets among Saudi children is high, and infants and toddlers should be the focus of rickets prevention strategies.

The prevalence and associated risk factors of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have been a significant area of focus in several studies conducted in Saudi Arabia. These studies have looked at varied populations, including school teachers, university students, and the general populace. The reported prevalence rates for IBS vary substantially across studies, ranging from 7.9% to an astounding 49.3%. The average prevalence noted across these studies is about 24%. The aim of this review is to collate, compare, and analyze data from these studies, hoping to shed light on the key risk factors and demographic trends associated with IBS in Saudi Arabia. This review encompasses data from 20 studies, aggregating information from 17,018 participants. The research methodologies adopted by each of these studies have been analyzed, especially focusing on their sample sizes, which vary significantly. Furthermore, the review incorporates details on the socio-demographic attributes of the participants, including age specifics, gender representation, and geographical distribution within Saudi Arabia. The results demonstrate a wide variability in IBS prevalence among different groups. The overall prevalence of IBS in Saudi Arabia based on the provided data is approximately 24%. Gender-based breakdown in some studies indicated varying prevalence among males and females, which indicated that females are more prone to the disease. The same for certain age groups, specifically between 51 and 60 years, which showed slightly higher rates. Factors such as educational discipline, living conditions, mental health, dietary habits, family history of IBS, and certain comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus were found to influence the occurrence of IBS in different cohorts. Moreover, lifestyle factors such as low water intake, lack of dietary fiber, stress, and even caffeine intake were associated with IBS. Socioeconomic aspects, including family income levels and academic performance, were also hinted to have a potential link with IBS prevalence. In light of the presented data, it is evident that IBS prevalence in Saudi Arabia is influenced by a multitude of factors, ranging from genetic and dietary to psychological and socioeconomic. The substantial variations in prevalence across different cohorts suggest the need for a more nuanced understanding of this condition, specifically tailored to the unique demographics and cultural contexts of Saudi Arabia. Early diagnosis and tailored interventions, considering these multifaceted determinants, are crucial for the effective management of IBS in the region.

Background: The relationship between psychiatric disorders and GI disorders such as IBS is well established. IBS patients typically suffer from depressive symptoms, which can aggravate their IBS symptoms. Objective: to quantify the prevalence of IBS and its association with depressive symptoms among the Riyadh general population. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on Riyadh general population. The study included Saudi citizens, age was above 18 years old. Data were collected through personal interviews. Two self-administered and validated questionnaires were used. The first questionnaire is the Rome III criteria; a system developed to classify functional GI disorders (FGIDs), which are disorders of the digestive system for which clinical symptoms cannot be explained by the presence of structural or tissue abnormalities, the second questionnaire is the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), a set of three self-report scales designed to measure the Major depressive disorder. Results: The prevalence of IBS, was 17.3%. 71.3% of cases had mixed (constipation and diarrhea) type, 5.3% had diarrhea predominant type and 23.4% had constipation predominant IBS. Most (73.4%) of the IBS cases were females. Among IBS cases, 20.2% had minimal depressive symptoms, 20.2% had major depression, mild severity. Major depression with moderate severity was found in 18.1% and major depression with severe severity was found in 28.7%. Family History of crohn's disease and stomach cancer were found in 17.0% and 92.6% of IBS cases respectively. Conclusion: A high prevalence of depression symptoms in our subjects emphasize the importance of the psychological evaluation of the patients with IBS, in order to better management of the patients and may also help to reduce the burden of health care costs.
