Iron and Phosphate Deficiency Regulators Concertedly Control Coumarin Profiles in Arabidopsis thaliana Roots During Iron, Phosphate, and Combined Deficiencies

Abstract: Plants face varying nutrient conditions, to which they have to adapt to. Adaptive responses are nutrient-specific and strategies to ensure supply and homeostasis for one nutrient might be opposite to another one, as shown for phosphate (Pi) and iron (Fe) deficiency responses, where many genes are regulated in an opposing manner. This was also observed on the metabolite levels. Whereas root and exudate levels of catechol-type coumarins, phenylpropanoid-derived 2-benzopyranones, which facilitate Fe acquisition, … Show more

“…They found that Pi deficiency and Fe deficiency stimulate different coumarin profiles, and that a combination of both nutrient deficiencies affects the coumarin profiles produced by the single nutrient deficiencies. This suggests that fine-tuning of the coumarin profiles depends on both Fe and Pi nutrition (Chutia etal. 2019).…”

“…Similar to glucosinolates, coumarin secretion in root exudates is significantly altered by low-iron and low-phosphate conditions [58,59]. Under low-Pi, coumarins, such as sculetin, flaxetin, and scopletin, are accumulated, whereas the other forms, especially the highly oxygenated forms, are suppressed.…”

“…Under low-Pi, coumarins, such as sculetin, flaxetin, and scopletin, are accumulated, whereas the other forms, especially the highly oxygenated forms, are suppressed. In contrast, low-iron conditions lead to increases in the levels of all types of coumarins [58,59]. Considering the roles of iron-dependent scopletin secretion in bacterial microbiome composition, this complex interplay between iron and phosphate likely influences plant interactions with microbes in the roots.…”
