“…Therefore, the photo-generated electrons become trapped in the SiO 2 layer and, with respect to electrochemistry, the SiO 2 layer acts as a dielectric under photocurrent and thereby improves the photoelectrochemical properties of the system, i.e., SiO 2 layer insulates the TiO 2 layer electrically from the substrate and consequently prevents continuous charge transfer to the substrate. This suggestion about the capacitive behavior of the SiO 2 layer is in agreement with the findings of Zhang et al [56] and Sun et al [57] yet both of these groups incorporated SiO 2 in the composite coating.…”

“…So far, the development of TiO 2 coatings with improved photoactive and photoelectrochemical properties has primarily concentrated on the methods to synthesize the TiO 2 coating, [27,34,58] the optimization of the following heat treatments [32] or the doping of the coatings [56,59,60]. However, as mentioned above, also the selection of the substrate material plays a key role with respect to the properties of the coating.…”

“…However, above 2 V vs SCE the current density spikes up to 12 mA/cm 2 , which is substantially higher compared to the uncoated Ti. The signal can be ascribed to water decomposition to gaseous oxygen, which seems to be electrocatalyzed by the black glass surface, similarly to other semiconductors . The coating was not damaged by the forward scan as the current density was dropping sharply during the reverse scan after attaining the terminal potential of 4 V vs SCE, which is an evidence of good pitting resistance of the coating.…”

“…Because the value of C dl is proportional to the number of active sites of oxide electrodes, it can be used to describe the surface area of the double-layer capacitor of solid/solution interfaces [22]. In this study, the values, Y 1 and n 1 , of CPE 1 were selected to calculate C dl value for evaluating the effective surface area of the specimens.…”
