“…In AGP patients, pancreatic calcium concentra tions and outputs were significantly greater in ACP than in NAC and AC. Similar results have previously been reported in duodenal juice [1,7,11,19]. Furthermore, hormonal stimulation produced no increase of pan creatic calcium secretion in ACP, but in creased it in NAC and AC.…”

“…being only about 10-20% of that observed in the pancreatic juice of NAC. This decrease could explain the high concen trations of ionized calcium which have re cently been observed in the duodenal juice of patients suffering from chronic pancreatitis [1,11,19], In previous work it has been found that there is hypersecretion of protein in AC com pared to NAC [1,9,20,21], The different results obtained in the present work may be because pancreatic juice was collected after the patients had been in hospital for 2-3 weeks alcohol. If this is the explanation it seems that the changes of pancreatic protein secretion created by chronic alcoholism do not last as long as changes in citrate secretion after cessation of alcohol abuse.…”

“…As we found that ionized calcium concen trations in the duodenal juice are indepen dent of caerulein administration and gall bladder contraction, we suppose that they are a better discriminating factor of different stages of chronic pancreatitis than total cal cium concentrations and outputs [3,[13][14][15][16][17][18] and ionized calcium outputs [18].…”

“…In a previous work. Lohse and Pfeiffer [18] demonstrated that in chronic pancreatitis total calcium as well as ionized calcium secretion were en hanced.…”

“…(b) Some modifications of pancreatic juice are probably induced by chronic alcohol con- In contrast to protein, bicarbonate con centration is decreased in pure pancreatic juice (but not duodenal juice) of chronic alco holics [28], Citrate which is normally secreted by the pancreas in parallel with protein secretion is decreased in the duodenal juice of alcoholic men compared to nonalcoholic controls [16] ( fig. 9).…”
