“…Tang et al prepared a SPEEK IPMC actuator with an IEC of 1.5 mol kg −1 and Pt electrode thickness of 7–8 µm. In spite of their higher IEC and thicker Pt layer compared with the S(25)PAEK and S(25)C(50)PAEK actuators, the SPEEK actuator exhibited very low actuation performance under a 1.5 V applied voltage at 10 Hz with a bending strain of almost zero . This leads to the conclusion that despite our rather thin electrode layer, the current was still uniformly distributed through the IPMC, albeit at a lower bending performance compared to literature.…”

“…SPEEK was prepared by the treatment of PEEK with 98% H 2 SO 4 (Scheme S1, Supporting Information) avoiding degradation and cross‐linking reactions, which might take place in the sulfonation with 100% H 2 SO 4 or with chlorosulfonic acid sulfonation agents . The PEEK and SPEEK were characterized by the fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectra (Figure S1, Supporting Information) in which the specific change of chemical structure and in turn the formation of sulfonic acid groups on the sulfonation reaction was checked . As shown in Figure S1 (Supporting Information), there were two characteristic absorptions at around 1024 and 1080 cm −1 , representing the stretching vibrations of the sulfonic acid groups.…”

“…1 H NMR spectra of SPEEK is shown in Figure S2 (Supporting Information). The signal at 7.5 ppm corresponded to the aromatic proton (H e ) ortho to SO 3 H at the position e as shown in Scheme S1 (Supporting Information) . According to previous report, the integral area ratio of H e signal to that of other aromatic protons was linked to the degree of sulfonation (DS), and therefore the DS for the SPEEK in this study was about 52% …”

“…This action results in swelling near the negative electrode, shrinkage near the positive electrode and bending of the actuator as can be seen in Figure 2. [29], Royal Society of Chemistry and Cambridge University Press [30]". These actuators were reported with maximum actuation strains of 3.3% [26,31], and the stress of 30 MPa [25,32].…”
