Ionic liquids combined with membrane separation processes: A review

Abstract: Combination of membrane processes and ionic liquids have received more and more attention in pollutants removal because it enhances separation efficiency but also broaden their research and application areas. This review provides a first and systematical summary on ionic liquids incorporate in membrane processes for VOCs or CO2 separation, including supported ionic liquid membranes (SILMs), ILs composite polymer membranes (ILPMs), ionic liquids composite mixed matrix membranes (ILMMMs), poly(ionic liquid)s mem… Show more

“…ILs are salts, comprised of (inorganic or organic) anion and (organic) cation parts that can be varied to adjust the IL properties, in agreement with the actual demands. Accordingly, ILs are taken into account as tailor-made compounds with broad recognition in various chemical-and biotechnological areas, thanks to their negligible vapor pressure (non-volatility), remarkable ionic conductivity, and wide electrochemical potential window [29].…”

“…If the trans‐membrane pressure difference exceeds the capillary forces keeping the ILs, the ILs will be protruded from the pores and the SILMs may fail in practical use. Ionic liquid based composite membranes (ILCMs), which combine the preeminent film forming ability of polymer and the high selectivity of ILs, may address the above problems . Abdollahi et al .…”

“…Ionic liquid based composite membranes (ILCMs), which combine the preeminent film forming ability of polymer and the high selectivity of ILs, may address the above problems. [35,36] Abdollahi et al employed the direct physical mixing method to prepare the membrane by embedding ILs ([Emim][Tf 2 N]) into Matrimid ® 5218 polymer. [37] (Figure 3a) The CO 2 permeability and CO 2 /CH 4 permselectivity of the blended membranes were increased from 7.16 to 20.96 barrer and 31.13 to 42.78 compared to that of pure Matrimid ® 5218, respectively.…”

“…As green organic solvents, ionic liquids can be adopted for VOCs or CO 2 separation. 14 Wang et al 15,16 investigated the effects of two ionic liquids with [HSO 4 ]-on oxidative desulfurization of coal. Ionic liquids can not only enhance the oxidation of -OH, aliphatic -CH 2 -, and aromatic -CH to generate the -COOH group, but also enable organic sulfur structures, that is, -S-S-and -SH, to be removed more efficiently.…”
