Ionic Liquids as Advantageous Solvents for Headspace Gas Chromatography of Compounds with Low Vapor Pressure

Abstract: The potential of ionic liquids as solvents for headspace gas chromatography was investigated. Three compounds with boiling points above 200 degrees C were selected to demonstrate the feasibility of the concept described. 2-Ethylhexanoic acid, formamide, and tri-n-butylamine as examples of acidic, neutral, and basic analytes were dissolved in acidic 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate (1), neutral 1-n-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium dicyanamide (2), and 2 containing 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene t… Show more

“…In addition, a reversal of enantiomeric elution order occurred when diastereomeric versions of the ILs were used. In another unique application, RTILs were examined as solvents for headspace GC (27). The compounds 2-ethyl-hexanoic acid, formamide, and tri-n-butylamine are examples of acidic, neutral, and basic analytes, respectively, that were dissolved in 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate and 1-n-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium dicyanamide.…”

“…Acetonitrile, methanol, and acetone were commonly used in recent studies [25,27,34,36,37]. Due to the similar function of methanol and acetonitrile, we took the latter to represent the organic disperser and discuss the dispersive effect.…”

“…Besides extraction, ILs were demonstrated to be advantageous solvents for headspace GC analysis of compounds with low vapor pressures, owing to the nonvolatility and heat stability of ILs [101]. Three acidic, neutral, and basic model analytes with boiling points above 200°C dissolved in ILs were determined with limits of detection and limits of quantification at the low-ppm level.…”
