Ionic Liquid-based Extraction of Sulfur Compounds From Gasoline as a Complementary Process to Oxidative Desulfurization

Abstract: The extractive desulfurization of a model and several real gasoline samples was investigated using imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs). Factorial design of experiments indicated that, among several process variables, the number of extraction steps and the IL/gasoline volume ratio were statistically highly significant. The results showed a desulfurization efficiency of 95.2% under the optimal conditions. The following order was observed for the extraction of thiophenic compounds: benzothiophene>thiophene>3-me… Show more

“…Recently, the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) method in combination with IL extraction has been extensively investigated because of its moderate operation conditions and high sulfur removal efficiency. Moreover, using ILs as alternatives to volatile organic solvents in extractive desulfurization processes is proven to be effective due to their advantages, such as wide liquid range, nonflammability, and high thermal stability. …”

“…Fenton-like reagents, vanadium-based, rhenium-based, and several nonmetal compounds were proved efficient for deep desulfurization using ILs as extractants or reaction media. The recent works on extraction and oxidative desulfurization are summarized in Table . For more details, please see Table S4 in the Supporting Information.…”

“…In this case, this polar solvent presents a double functionality of receiving the organosulfur compounds from the fuel phase and promoting a suitable medium for efficient oxidative catalysis. [28][29][30][31][32] The strategic combination of a highly efficient catalyst and a sustainable extraction medium is needed to achieve deep desulfurization in a short period of time. Hydrogen peroxide has been demonstrated to be an effective oxidant for oxidative desulfurization processes that are catalyzed by polyoxometalates and are considered to produce no harmful by-products.…”
