Ion-exchange separation and spectrophotometric determination of trace amounts of niobium in silicate rocks

Abstract: A spectrophotometric determination of trace amounts of niobium in rocks and minerals is described. Elemental interferences emanating from the silicate rock matrix are discussed. An ion-exchange separation method is proposed in an attempt to avoid these interferences. A method involving sodium peroxide fusion and hydrochloric acidhydrogen peroxide leaching is also described. Results for the determination of trace amounts of niobium in international standards of rocks and minerals are shown.

“…Ion exchange separation of Nb, or a group of elements including Nb from solid materials, can be undertaken using both cationic resins (Mazzucotelli et al 1977) and anionic resins, with particular reference to the analysis of alloys in conjunction with spectrophotometric methods (Westelen 1960, Dixon andHeadridge 1964). Rehkämper (1994) isolated Nb using a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination in this way and it is his procedure for the separation of Nb that we use in the analytical scheme presented here.…”

“…Multielement Separations. Schemes for the separation of metallic elements in silicate analysis by ion exchange continue to be developed (218,306,475). Separations on macroporous resins (224) and in the presence of tartaric (422) and triethylenetetramine hexaacetic acid (510) are reported.…”
