Ion Chromatography Determination of Heavy Metals in Airborne Particulate with Preconcentration and Large Volume Direct Injection

Abstract: A flow injection analysis system with on-line enrichment was developed for simultaneous determination of trace levels of Cu2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Mn2+, Cd2+, Pb 2+ and Fe3+, by high-performance ion chromatography (HPIC) with spectrophotometric detection. It is a highly sensitive and low cost alternative methodology. Ion Pac CS5A was used as the analytical column with eluent composition of sodium nitrate 160 mM and oxalic acid 36 mM. Quantification after post-column reaction with PAR allows detection limits betw… Show more

“…Several techniques are available for compositional analysis, including atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), ion chromatography [15] and voltammetry [16]. The analysis of PM filter samples requires involved digestion procedures, making routine analysis expensive and time-consuming.…”

“…These limitations could be overcome by the use of preconcentration-separation procedures including solvent extraction, coprecipitation, ion exchange, cloud point extraction, solvent sublation, membrane filtration, etc. [15][16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…LODs of different systems are summarized in Table 2 as well as limits of quantification of final version of detection system. The limits of detection of the present method are thirty-, three-and threehundred-times lower, respectively, than those reported by the method employing IonPac column, oxalic acid as an eluent and the spectrophotometric detection with 4-(2-pyridylazo)resorcinol reagent [50].…”
