Iodoacetate and allogenous cartilage particles as models for arthritis induction in equine

Abstract: Experimental models of osteoarthritis (OA) have been widely developed in different animal species, because of the high incidence of osteoarthritis diseases in humans and animals. To date, no ideal OA animal model has been reported. The present study compare different osteoarthritis models to determine which one is suitable for inducing experimental equine OA. Fifteen donkeys were divided into three equal groups (n = 5). The radio carpal joints of the right forelimb of 15 donkeys were injected with 25 mg monoio… Show more

“…In the present study, lameness was graded according to AAEP, where the highest score was reached after one week then decreased gradually. These results are in agreement with the previous report [34] that lameness was a major feature for MIA-injected donkeys. Also, Uilenreef et al (2019) [37] assessed the lameness in MIA-injected pigs, where the animals showed rapid lameness which was greatly declined by the end of the experiment.…”

“…Little of the literature used donkey as the OA model [32][33][34], although it is one of the equine species that is phylogenetically and biochemically closest to the horse, in addition to its low price and low cost of feedstuff and housing [34].…”

“…In addition, monoiodoacetate can be effective in inducing OA in horses just as it is in mice. Elmesirty et al found that injection of 50 mg of mono-iodoacetate into the joint leads to synovitis within a week which subsequently progresses to osteoarthritis within 70 days [55].…”
