Zusammenfassung. Hintergrund: H202 and daraus gebildete freie Radikale sind fir oxidativ bedingte Schaden verantwortlich. Es wurde untersucht, ob Iodid H 202 abbauen kann and somit einen Schutz vor oxidativem Stress darstellt. Material and Methode.' Die Abnahme der Konzentration von H202 in physiologischen Pufferlosungen nach IodidZusatz wurde durch Titration mit KMnO; Losungen bestimmt. Viskosimetrisch konnte die schutzende Wirkung von Iodid auf Hyaluronatlosungen vor dem oxidativen Abbau durch H202 gemessen werden. Resultate: Mikromolare Mengen von Iodid konnen die Konzentration von H202 in physiologischen Losungen rasch herabsetzen. Iodid besitzt die Fahigkeit, Hyaluronat vor der Depolymerisation durch H 202 zu schutzen. Schlussfolgerung: Die schi tzende Wirkung von Iodid vor H202 induziertem, oxidativem Stress kann unter anderem fir die positive Wirkung verantwortlich gemacht werden, die Bespruhungen and Iontophorese mit Iodsole, wie sie in Bad Hall (Oberosterreich) durchgefiihrt werden, am vorderen Augenabschnitt bewirken. Background: H2O2 and free radicals are responsible for damaging reactions by oxidative stress. It was investigated whether iodide can destroy H 2 O2 and a protection against oxidative stress can be obtained by this reaction.Materials and methods: The decrease of H 2O2 concentrations in physiological buffer solutions by addition of iodide was determined by titration with KMnO4. By viscometry the protecting activity of iodide on hyaluronate solutions against oxidative degradation by H 2O2 was measured.Results: Micromolar amounts of iodide can decrease the H202 concentration in physiological solutions within a short time. Iodide has the capability to protect hyaluronate from depolymerization by H202 .Conclusions: The protecting activity of iodide from H202-induced oxidative stress may be responsible for the positive effect on the anterior part of the eye by sprays and iontophoresis with iodide brine as performed in Bad Hall (Upper Austria).
