Nowadays, cities are facing an increasing number of bikes used by citizens therefore the need of monitoring and managing their traffic becomes crucial. With the development of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) in smart city, public bike sharing system has been considered as an urban transportation system that can collect data from mobile devices. In such network, the biggest challenge for sensor nodes is to forward data to sinks in an energy efficient way because of the following limitations: limited energy resources, limited storage capacity and limited bandwidth. Data aggregation is a key mechanism to save energy consumption and network capacity. It can be defined as an approach to combine data of various sensors into a single packet, thus reducing sensor communication costs and achieving a longer network lifetime. The main contribution of this paper is to introduce an efficient, "Internet of Bikes", IoB-DTN routing protocol based on data aggregation being applied to mobile network IoT devices running a data collection application on urban bike sharing system based sensor network. We propose three variants of IoB-DTN: IoB based on spatial aggregation (IoB-SA), IoB based on temporal aggregation (IoB-TA) and IoB based on spatio-temporal aggregation (IoB-STA). We compare the three variants with the multi-hop IoB-DTN protocol without aggregation and the low-power long-range technology, LoRa type. Comparison results verify that the three variants of IoB-DTN based on data aggregation improve the delivery rate, energy consumption and throughput.

The Connected Bike project combines several technologies, both hardware and software, to provide cycling enthusiasts with a modern alternative solution for training. Therefore, a trainer can monitor online through a Web Application some of the important parameters for training, more specifically the speed, cadence and power generated by the cyclist. Also, the trainer can see at every moment where the rider is with the aid of a GPS module. The system is built out of both hardware and software components. The hardware is in charge of collecting, scaling, converting and sending data from sensors. On the software side, there is the server, which consists of the Back-End and the MQTT (Message Queues Telemetry Transport) Broker, as well as the Front-End of the Web Application that displays and manages data as well as collaboration between cyclists and trainers. Finally, there is the Android Application that acts like a remote command for the hardware module on the bike, giving the rider control over how and when the ride is monitored.

To boost energy saving for the general delay-tolerant IoT networks, a two-stage and single-relay queueing communication scheme is investigated. Concretely, a traffic-aware Nthreshold and gated-service policy are applied at the relay. As two fundamental and significant performance metrics, the mean waiting time and long-term expected power consumption are explicitly derived and related with the queueing and service parameters, such as packet arrival rate, service threshold and channel statistics. Besides, we take into account the electrical circuit energy consumptions when the relay server and access point (AP) are in different modes and energy costs for mode transitions, whereby the power consumption model is more practical. The expected power minimization problem under the mean waiting time constraint is formulated. Tight closed-form bounds are adopted to obtain tractable analytical formulae with less computational complexity. The optimal energy-saving service threshold that can flexibly adjust to packet arrival rate is determined. In addition, numerical results reveal that: 1) sacrificing the mean waiting time not necessarily facilitates power savings; 2) a higher arrival rate leads to a greater optimal service threshold; and 3) our policy performs better than the current state-of-the-art.Index Terms-Delay tolerant IoT relaying networks, mean waiting time, N -threshold and gated policy, two-hop queueing, and traffic-aware power saving.
