BackgroundHealthy university students have been shown to use psychoactive substances, expecting them to be functional means for enhancing their cognitive capacity, sometimes over and above an essentially proficient level. This behavior called Neuroenhancement (NE) has not yet been integrated into a behavioral theory that is able to predict performance. Job Demands Resources (JD-R) Theory for example assumes that strain (e.g. burnout) will occur and influence performance when job demands are high and job resources are limited at the same time. The aim of this study is to investigate whether or not university students’ self-reported NE can be integrated into JD-R Theory’s comprehensive approach to psychological health and performance.Methods1,007 students (23.56 ± 3.83 years old, 637 female) participated in an online survey. Lifestyle drug, prescription drug, and illicit substance NE together with the complete set of JD-R variables (demands, burnout, resources, motivation, and performance) were measured. Path models were used in order to test our data’s fit to hypothesized main effects and interactions.ResultsJD-R Theory could successfully be applied to describe the situation of university students. NE was mainly associated with the JD-R Theory’s health impairment process: Lifestyle drug NE (p < .05) as well as prescription drug NE (p < .001) is associated with higher burnout scores, and lifestyle drug NE aggravates the study demands-burnout interaction. In addition, prescription drug NE mitigates the protective influence of resources on burnout and on motivation.ConclusionAccording to our results, the uninformed trying of NE (i.e., without medical supervision) might result in strain. Increased strain is related to decreased performance. From a public health perspective, intervention strategies should address these costs of non-supervised NE. With regard to future research we propose to model NE as a means to reach an end (i.e. performance enhancement) rather than a target behavior itself. This is necessary to provide a deeper understanding of the behavioral roots and consequences of the phenomenon.

In order to minimise the risk of patient misidentification in clinical settings, the German Coalition for Patient Safety published recommendations for safety patient identification in 2008. The aim of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate a theoretical framework of knowledge transfer. The purpose of the framework was to enhance hospital staff's ability to apply the recommendations for safe patient identification in the daily routine of patient care. A data bank-based research and literature review have been conducted. Research topics were: knowledge transfer, change management and implementation science. Within the application of the concept group interviews were held with hospital staff and the interview material was evaluated using content analysis. On this basis a tailored multifaceted implementation strategy has been developed and applied in 8 hospital wards of 4 hospitals belonging to a communal hospital concern. The evaluation of the developed knowledge transfer concept was conducted 4 weeks after the concept application with a written questionnaire. The developed framework concept of knowledge translation consisted of 4 phases built on top of each other: initiation phase; analysis phase; implementation phase; evaluation phase. The multifaceted implementation strategy included 3 interventions: a poster, a computer-based training and a guideline for team meetings. The survey yielded responses from 56 individuals: 96% declared that they know about the existence of the recommendations for safe patient identification; 86% said that they know about the content of the recommendations; 91% have striven to apply the recommendations in the daily routine of patient care; 71% stated that the recommendations for safe patient identification have become integral part in the daily routine of patient care. To become aware of the recommendations and its content the respondents have used on average 2.3 interventions, however the effect of the CBS was relatively small. The developed theoretical framework concept for knowledge transfer provides a way to integrate the recommendations for safe patient identification in the daily routine of patient care and to counteract risk factors promoting misidentification. Therefore a multifaceted implementation strategy is promising.

It is abstract in a sense that the training in science provides theoretical clues to problem-solving but it is not codified like the transmitted knowledge of doctors and lawyers or learnt like in the socialization of professors.…”

Scope of the seriesThe landscape of higher education has in recent years undergone significant change. This has been particular the case for research training, academic life, employment, working conditions and entrepreneurial activities of universities around the globe. The academy is expected to be more professional in teaching, more productive in research and more entrepreneurial in everything. Some of the changes involved have raised questions about the attractiveness of an academic career for today's graduates. At the same time, knowledge has come to be identified as the most vital resource of contemporary societies.The Changing Academy series examines the nature and extent of the changes experienced by the academic profession. It aims to address these changes from an international comparative perspective, focusing at both the higher education system level as well as the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in particular. It explores both the reasons for and the consequences of these changes.The series considers the implications of the changes for the attractiveness of the academic profession as a career and for the ability of the academic community to contribute to the further development of knowledge societies and the attainment of national goals. It provides analyses on these matters drawing initially on available data-sets and qualitative research studies with special emphasis on the international studies of the Changing Academic Profession and the national surveys in STEM fields.
