Involvement of MicroRNA-198 Overexpression in the Poor Prognosis of Esophageal Cancer

Abstract: Objective: This study aimed to investigate whether the miR-198 expression level is related to clinicopathological factors and prognosis of esophageal cancer. Methods: MicroRNA was extracted from esophageal cancer patients who underwent surgery for assessment using the Taqman@ MicroRNA assay. The correlation between miR-198 expression and clinicopathological features was analyzed, and the significance of miR-198 as a prognostic factor and its relationship with survival was determined. Results: MicroRNA-198 (miR… Show more

“…Up to now, lower expression of miR-198 has been reported in lung adenocarcinoma,4 pancreatic cancer,20 and colorectal cancer 10. However, higher expressed miR-198 has been confirmed in other malignancies such as retinoblastoma,7 squamous cell carcinoma of tongue,6 esophageal cancer,5 pancreatic adenocarcinoma or ampullary adenocarcinoma,8 prostate cancer,11 and multiple myeloma 9. Overexpression of miR-198 has also been found in noncancerous diseases such as severe preeclampsia,21 lupus nephritis,22 and human anencephaly 23.…”

“…From nearly all biological processes, miRNA can exert the function as posttranscriptional regulation 3. Aberrant expression of microRNA-198 (miR-198) has been found to be correlated to the carcinogenesis and disease progression of several classes of cancers, including lung adenocarcinoma,4 esophageal cancer,5 squamous cell carcinoma of tongue,6 retinoblastoma,7 pancreatic adenocarcinoma,8 multiple myeloma,9 colorectal cancer,10 and prostate cancer 11. However, there were only three research papers studying the expression of miR-198 in HCC.…”

“…In human cancers, miR-198 was reported to be downregulated in colorectal (4), lung (5), pancreatic (6) and hepatocellular carcinoma (8,9), and generally acts as a tumor suppressor by inhibiting cancer cell growth and migration. In contrast, high expression of miR-198 was noted to be associated with a shorter disease-free survival and overall survival time in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas (7), with poor prognosis in esophageal cancer (11) and in high-grade prostate tumors (10). These data suggest that the roles of miR-198 may vary in different types of cancer.…”

“…miRNAs have been implicated in a variety of biological processes, including embryonic development, cell differentiation and diseases including human cancer (3). miR-198 has been reported to be deregulated in several human cancers, including colorectal (4), lung (5), pancreatic (6,7), hepato cellular (8,9), prostate (10) and esophageal cancer (11). However, the involvement and effects of miR-198 on breast cancer progression and the underlying mechanism remain unknown.…”

“…Until now, EC has low survival rate because of its aggressive nature, distant metastasis, and largely unknown molecular mechanism of progression (He et al, 2012;Wang et al, 2013;). To determine a specific biomarker at the gene level and establish effective prevention, obtaining an early diagnosis method has become one of the research focuses in the field of tumor and EC prevention (Qi et al, 2013).…”
