Investigations on Different Multilevel Inverter Control Techniques by Simulation

Abstract: This paper presents simulation studies on different control techniques of 3-and 5-level diode clamped multilevel inverters i.e. Sinusoidal PWM, Selective Harmonic Elimination, and Optimized Harmonic PWM techniques. Paper contributes towards the detailed simulation and analysis of these techniques which has not been given in previous work. The performance of each technique has been investigated based upon reduction in Total Harmonic Distortion. For simulation, Matlab/Power System Blockset/PowerGUI has been used. Show more

“…The three-level switching functions S a (t) , S b (t) , S c (t) for the legs of an inverter are similar to those of an AC/DC converter. Thus, the switching functions for three-level PWM converters can be generally expressed as [7]- [10].…”

“…Unidirectional or bidirectional power flow of real and reactive power, power flow control, and power factor improvement are also possible in three stage SST topology [3]. The high voltage AC-DC converter in three stage topology is mainly multilevel type to withstand high voltage switching conditions [4]. In [5], SiC based MOSFETs/IGBTs are used for manufacturing multilevel converters.…”

“…The use of multilevel approach is believed to be a promising alternative in very high power conversion processing [2,8]. Chaturvedi et al [3] presented simulation studies on different control techniques for three and five level DCMLI. The performance of each technique has been investigated based upon reduction in THD.…”
