Investigations of the Mechanism of Gold Nanoparticle Stability and Surface Functionalization in Capillary Electrophoresis

Abstract: Covalently functionalized gold nanoparticles influence capillary electrophoresis separations of neurotransmitters in a concentration and surface chemistry-dependent manner. Gold nanoparticles with either primarily covalently functionalized carboxylic acid (Au@COOH) or amine (Au@NH 2 ) surface groups are characterized using extinction spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and zeta potential measurements. The impact the presence of nanoparticles and their surface chemistry is investigated, and at least… Show more

“…S1) confirmed a monodisperse size of 9.6 nm with a standard deviation r = 0.85 nm. Zeta potential measurements revealed the nanoparticles highly stable and have a surface charge of À40.2 ± 0.9 mV at pH 9.4, in complete agreement with literature data [37,38]. Upon decreasing the pH, the zeta potential remained almost constant down to pH 6.…”

“…30 The zeta potential of PGNPs and SGNPs was -44.4 mV and -51 mV, which indicates excellent colloidal stability for both formulations. 31,32 The colloidal stability of these GNPs was further evaluated in different physiological media after 1 week. We found negligible change in nanoparticles size dispersed in water, phosphate-buffered saline solution, and Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium indicating that nanoparticles are suitable for long-term use.…”

“…It has extensive applications in food [3,4], environment [5], biochemistry [6,7] and medicine [8] and it has been coupled with many analytical technologies, such as GC [9], HPLC [10,11], CE [12], UV [13,14] and MS [15]. The core part of the SPME technique is the coating, a stationary phase that adsorbs the analytes from varied samples.…”
