Investigations of selected pathogens among village pigs in Central Papua, Indonesia

Abstract: Village pig husbandry is an important part of livestock production in Papua Province, Eastern Indonesia. However, high level of disease and mortality constrains production. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of the selected pathogens in village pigs in the Jayawijaya Region of Papua Province, Indonesia. “…This finding should alert other provinces in Indonesia. The bacterium has been isolated previously in other provinces ( 20 , 21 ), but the cases of human S. suis meningitis we report extend the known range of S. suis in Indonesia. Pigs are raised in many provinces in Indonesia, and densities differ.…”

“…Published reports of animal cases and isolation of S. suis from animals in Bali are not available. Isolation of S. suis from tonsil samples has been reported from Papua, Indonesia ( 21 ). Another group in Udayana University is working to isolate and detect S. suis from sick pigs in Bali, further suggesting that S. suis is present in the island (K. Besung, Udayana University, pers.…”

“…However, the high level of infestation and mortality of swine obstructs the development of the production in the country. Studies by Nugroho et al (2015) indicate the spread of the following parasites among swine: nematodes of the Strongylida order, T. suis, A. suum, S. ransomi, and also coccidians. In Tanzania, swine are also ubiquitously recorded to host helminths of the gastointestinal tract (infection rate of helminthiases equaled 63.7%): Oesophagostomum spp., Trichostrongylus spp., A. suum, T. suis and S. ransomi with extensity of infestation equaling 57.4%, 17.5%, 5.3% and 1.1%, respectively (Kabululu et al, 2015).…”
