Given the challenges in managing large deformation disasters in energy engineering, traffic tunnel engineering, and slope engineering, the excavation compensation theory has been proposed for large deformation disasters and the supplementary technology system is developed accordingly. This theory is based on the concept that "all destructive behaviors in tunnel engineering originate from excavation." This paper summarizes the development of the excavation compensation theory in five aspects: the "theory," "equipment," "technology," the design method with large deformation mechanics, and engineering applications. First, the calculation method for compensation force has been developed based on this theory, and a comprehensive large deformation disaster control theory system is formed. Second, a negative Poisson's ratio anchor cable with high preload, large deformation, and super energy absorption characteristics has been independently developed and applied to large deformation disaster control. An intelligent tunnel monitoring and early warning cloud platform system are established for remote monitoring and early warning system of Newton force in landslide geological hazards. Third, the double gradient advance grouting technology, the two-dimensional blasting technology, and the integrated Newton force monitoring--early warning--control technology are developed for different engineering environments. Finally, some applications of this theory in China's energy, traffic tunnels, landslide, and other field projects have been analyzed, which successfully demonstrates the capability of this theory in large deformation disaster control.

In this study, we present a comprehensive investigation of the ground stability of a gob-side entry by roof cutting in relation to the mining stage, based on field measurements, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation, and in situ practice. Differing from the normal mode of gob-side entry, the mininginduced stress and strain evolution under gob-side entry by roof cutting (GSERC) is extremely complex, and unreasonable support can cause serious deformation and roof collapse of the GSERC. Taking Dadougou coal mine as the engineering background, a field investigation of the ground response, a rock mechanics experiment, and field measurement of the surrounding rock mass were first conducted. The roof-to-floor convergence presented an asymmetric deformation feature, based on the central axis. Numerical simulation is used to obtain results regarding the evolution of the second invariant of deviator stress and the third invariant of deviator stress (DSTI) in the primary use stage and the secondary reuse stage. It was found that the roof cutting action caused the peak value of the DSTI to transfer to the deep part of the roof. The DSTI value is greater than 0, indicating that tensile failure is dominant at 6-8 m of the roof above tailgate 5202, the upper part of the virgin coal rib, and 1.4 m away from the gangue rib. Finally, a support strategy for the following mining stages, including a support scheme for the primary use stage and the secondary reuse stage, is proposed based on the evolution law of the GSERC. The field-measured results demonstrate that this support strategy can effectively control the convergence of tailgate 5203, thus leading to a better environment for coal mining. Additionally, the proposed mining stage support strategy can provide a reference for other similar projects.

The gob‐side entry‐retaining by roof cutting and pressure relief (GERRC) method is an advanced no‐pillar mining method that can significantly improve coal recovery and reduce roadway accidents. However, according to case studies, there is relatively little research on the application of the GERRC method in geological conditions of soft rock formations (especially when the roof and floor are both mudstone), and such research is needed. Therefore, based on the typical soft strata of the Xinyi Coal Mine, this paper analyzes the failure mechanism of the roadways and proposes the GERRC method with coal rib and corner strengthened support (CRCSS). The evaluation indexes of the roof convergence rate and cable safety margin are established, and the effects of roof cutting and CRCSS on roadway deformation control are explored by a numerical comparison test. The results show that roof cutting has a limited effect on roadway deformation. The deformation can be reduced by 75.77% by implementing CRCSS on the basis of GERRC. Then, the evolution characteristics of roadway stress and deformation in the process of mining are further discussed through field contrast tests. The field application results show that compared with that of GERRC with conventional support, the surrounding rock deformation of GERRC with CRCSS is reduced by more than 55%, the safety margin of the cable is improved. The overpressure of the hydraulic prop is diminished, and the stability distance of the roadway is reduced by approximately 30%. Finally, this paper discusses the mechanism to control roadway deformation by CRCSS. This research expounds the rationality of CRCSS, and the results can provide a reference for other situations with similar geological conditions.
