Investigation on Rubber-Modified Polybenzoxazine Composites for Lubricating Material Applications

Abstract: Effects of liquid amine-terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile (ATBN) on the properties of bisphenol-A/anilinebased polybenzoxazine (PBA-a) composites were investigated. Liquid ATBN decreased gel time and lowered curing temperature of the benzoxazine resin (BA-a). The PBA-a/ATBN-based self-lubricating composites resulted in substantial enhancement regarding their tribological, mechanical, and thermal properties. The inclusion of the ATBN at 5% by weight was found decreasing the friction coefficient and improved we… Show more

“…This characteristic resulted in a decrease in the coefficient of friction. In addition, as expected for the composite based on polybenzoxazine having a higher storage modulus value (more rigid surface), the smoother worn surface or no removal surface agreeing with the lower wear rate was also observed [ 29 , 30 ].…”

“…Finally, an application of UFPNR as a toughening filler in polybenzoxazine was demonstrated. Polybenzoxazine is a phenolic‐type thermoset that have been used as a matrix for composites in many applications such as electronic packaging, [ 21 ] self‐lubricating and friction materials, [ 22 ] and aerospace industries. [ 23 ] However, polybenzoxazine has been reported to show relatively low toughness and resistance on impact due to its rigidity of the chemical structure.…”

“…However, polybenzoxazine still has shortcomings such as being cured at higher temperature, processing difficulty, and higher brittleness [7,8,9,13]. Commonly two methodologies are employed to overcome these limitations, (i) altering the benzoxazine monomer structure by molecular design, as new functionalities can be introduced by modifying the structure of the main chain [14,15,16,17], side chain [18,19,20], or end chain structure [21,22,23,24], (ii) by adding a second component such as nano-inorganic particles [25,26,27,28], rubber elastomers [29], fiber [30], or thermoplastic polymers [31,32,33].…”
