Investigation of the influence of image reconstruction filter and scan parameters on operation of automatic tube current modulation systems for different CT scanners

Abstract: Variation in the user selected CT scanning parameters under automatic tube current modulation (ATCM) between hospitals has a substantial influence on the radiation doses and image quality for patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of changing image reconstruction filter and scan parameter settings on tube current, dose and image quality for various CT scanners operating under ATCM. The scan parameters varied were pitch factor, rotation time, collimator configuration, kVp, image thickness… Show more

“…It can therefore be difficult for operators of CT scanners to fully understand how different selections in the imaging protocol will affect the applied ATCM, such that the ATCM might not always be optimally used. Some studies 3,4 have emphasized the need for CT users to have full knowledge of how ATCM operates and to be aware of the differences between systems from various vendors. The way certain scan settings affect the ATCM from different vendors has been an area of interest for many years.…”

“…The way certain scan settings affect the ATCM from different vendors has been an area of interest for many years. 3,[5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12] The focus has been on the effect of a limited number of scan settings or on a specific vendor ATCM. However, an extensive study investigating the influence of all variable scan settings and covering all of the vendor implementations of ATCM is, to our knowledge, missing in the literature.…”

“…Modern scanners were developed to cover a wider beam collimation range per rotation of the CT X-ray tube. It would reduce the scanning time and radiation dose received by the patient [22]. The DLP value and effective diameter were dependent on the scan length and range, as stated in other studies [2,7,9,23].…”
