Epidemics bring along many pathologies and become a threat for ill individuals because of an outbreak and those exposed to the outbreak process. Many negative psychological and educational results can be encountered following the COVID-19 process when previous studies were considered together with these threats. In this context, this research aimed to examine the effect of the COVID-19 on anxiety sensitivity, death anxiety, and resilience. In addition, examining anxiety sensitivity in terms of some personal variables (gender, physical health, marital status, and working status). The study has been conducted on a relational survey method. The participants consisted of 955 individuals aged between 18-68, of which 281 were males, and 662 were females. In this study, Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3, Death Anxiety Scale, and Brief Resilience Scale were used to collect data. The data were analyzed with Pearson correlation coefficient, regression, independent samples t-test, and ANOVA. The result of analyses showed a positive correlation between anxiety sensitivity and death anxiety; however, there is a negative correlation between resilience and anxiety sensitivity. Furthermore, resilience and anxiety sensitivity differed significantly according to gender, marital status, and working status (student, unemployed, employed, retired); however, the level of death anxiety did not differ according to gender and marital status. Anxiety sensitivity, death anxiety, and resilience did not differ significantly in terms of physical health. When considering the finding obtained in the present study, individuals with high anxiety sensitivity levels were affected more by the COVID -19 pandemic, but those with high resilience levels were affected less.

Individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus may experience death anxiety and experiential avoidance, which may impact negatively on health-related quality of life. Meaning in life is a positive psychological resource that protects against negative psychosocial outcomes. Although a direct relationship between these variables exists, to our knowledge, previous research has not explored their interaction effect. The present study examined whether meaning in life moderates the relationship between (1) the multidimensional death anxiety and health-related quality of life, and (2) experiential avoidance and health-related quality of life among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. The pool of participants consisted of 311 type 2 diabetes outpatients drawn from a tertiary health care institution in South-East Nigeria. The participants completed several self-report measures, such as the short form of the Diabetes Quality of Life Questionnaire, Death Anxiety Inventory–Revised, Acceptance and Action Questionnaire, and the Presence of Meaning in life subscale of Meaning in Life Questionnaire. The results of a regression analysis showed that death anxiety in terms of death acceptance, death finality, and thoughts about death were independently associated with poor health-related quality of life at low, but not at average and high levels of meaning in life. Externally generated death anxiety was associated with poor health-related quality of life at low and average, but not at high levels of meaning in life. Finally, experiential avoidance was associated with poor health-related quality of life at low and average, but not at high levels of meaning in life. We concluded that psychological interventions geared towards promoting health-related quality of life of type 2 diabetes mellitus patients should consider integrating meaning in life for its protective nature in improving positive health outcomes and recovery.

Effect of Group Logotherapy on Anxiety About Death and Existential Loneliness in Patients With Advanced Cancer

BackgroundAlthough logotherapy has been shown to relieve other psychological symptoms of patients with cancer, no studies have specifically investigated the effect of logotherapy on anxiety about death and existential loneliness in these patients.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to determine the effect of group logotherapy on anxiety about death and existential loneliness in patients with advanced cancer.MethodsSixty-three patients who were in the advanced stage of cancer were recruited from 2 hospital oncology services and were randomly assigned to either experimental (n = 31) or control group (n = 32). The intervention group received 10 weekly 2-hour group logotherapy. Templer’s Death Anxiety Scale and ELQ were completed pre- and posttreatment.ResultsA 2 × 2 mixed analysis of variance was used to determine the effect of the treatment on each of the dependent variables. The analyses revealed that patients in the logotherapy group reported a significant decrease in anxiety about death and existential loneliness after (vs before) the treatment. No significant decreases were observed in the waitlist control group.ConclusionsThese results have implications for treating death anxiety and feelings of existential loneliness among patients with advanced cancer. They suggest that group logotherapy is highly effective in reducing these existential concerns. Limitations and avenues for future research are discussed.Implications for PracticeThe study emphasizes that group logotherapy can be considered in oncology care programs by healthcare professionals and in educational curriculums and is suggested for use among caregivers and patients with advanced cancer.
