Investigation of Temperature Effect on Start-Up Operation from Anaerobic Digestion of Acidified Palm Oil Mill Effluent

Abstract: Malaysia is one of the largest palm oil producers worldwide and its most abundant waste, palm oil mill effluent (POME), can be used as a feedstock to produce methane. Anaerobic digestion is ideal for treating POME in methane production due to its tolerance to high-strength chemical oxygen demand (COD). In this work, we compared the culture conditions during the start-up of anaerobic digestion of acidified POME between thermophilic (55 °C) and mesophilic (37 °C) temperatures. The pH of the digester was maintain… Show more

“…According to Streitwieser [68], the thermophilic range is a better option for easily degradable substrates, which leads to an increase in biogas production as well as an increase in the reaction rates. Besides, shorter start-up time is needed for the new operating biogas plants at thermophilic conditions [69][70][71]. To supply stable biogas production, the temperature should be maintained stable [72].…”

“…Anaerobic digesters were constructed using 2-L heavy-duty vacuum bottles filled with 400 mL of palm oil mill effluent (POME) and 5.0 g of activated sludge to start the digestion (Hamzah et al, 2019 ). The POME was obtained from a palm oil processing factory in Malaysia.…”

“…Pada tahap awal, pH mengalami penurunan untuk setiap laju pengadukan. Hal ini disebabkan dikarenakan terjadinya prevalensi VFA (volatiles fatty acid) [6]. Hal ini akan meningkatkan pertumbuhan bakteri asidogenik dikarenakan pertumbuhan ideal bakteri asidogenik berada pada rentang pH 5,5-6,5 [14].…”
