Investigation of removal of anthocyanin in turnip juice wastewater by using different adsorbents

Abstract: The aim of this study is to eliminate the colour pigment of anthocyanin in the composition of turnip juice under different experimental conditions using low cost adsorbents (eggshells, pumpkin seed hulls, almond shells, black-green-red tea wastes, natural clay material). For this purpose, a series of discrete adsorption experiments were performed. Contact time for each set of experiments, adsorbent amount, mixing speed and temperature were fixed at 30 min, 2 g, 150 rpm and 20 °C. The effects of pH change of wa… Show more

“…These parameters measured were electrical conductivity, COD, absorbance, nitrite (Table 2) and the experiment took between 2 and 3 h [2]. To model and analyze the continuous adsorption parameters, the response surface design, in which the response is influenced by several variables, was used to provide a mathematical model, though the Box-Behnken design, which relates the Y response to the selected factors, was applied to predict the adsorption rate (Equation ( 4)): Y = a 0 + Σa j x j + Σa jj x j 2 + ΣΣa jk x j x j (4) where Y is the predicted response for the adsorption rate (%), x j and x k are coded independent variables and a 0 , a j , a jj and a jk are the intercept, linear effect, square effect and interaction effect, respectively. The measured experimental responses and the responses predicted by MINITAB 18 software with the number of experiments N = 15.…”

“…The main reason for this improvement is the decrease in industrial activity and the absence of effluents [2]. Most human activities that use water produce wastewater, and therefore, pollution levels in the natural environment are increasing alarmingly [3], negatively affecting the ecological balance, leading to serious problems and, subsequently, human health [2,4].…”

“…It is produced by lactic acid fermentation. Generally this beverage manufactured in Adana, Mersin, Kahramanmaraş, Gaziantep, Osmaniye and Hatay provinces in Turkey [17]. In this study, turnip juice was chosen as a carbon source due to its rich components, such as β-carotene, group B vitamins, calcium, potassium, and iron [18].…”
