Investigation of pneumatized articular eminence in orthodontic malocclusions

Abstract: A relatively high rate of pneumatized articular eminence was observed among patients with orthodontic malocclusions (3.42%) when compared to the general population studies. Knowledge about these structures is helpful for the interpretation of cephalometric and panoramic radiographs and provides valuable information especially prior to temporomandibular joint surgery to avoid intra-operative reconstruction and complications.

“…In terms of the type of pneumatization, most researchers found an almost equal distribution of unilocular and multilocular types (5, 8, 9, 10, 14, 15), except Orhan et al (15) and Laderia et al (2), who reported a higher incidence of the multilocular type (75% and 98.7%, respectively). The present study determined a higher prevalence of the multilocular type for PAT (86.1%, Table 1).…”

“…In the literature, a few studies have assessed the prevalence of PAT on CBCT images (2,15). The first study performed by Miloglu et al (13) reported a rate of 8%.…”

“…The accessory air cells are believed to begin to pneumatize after puberty and achieve full size several years later as mastoid air cells [7,25]. Moreover, the puberty period has been designated to commence at 12-13 years of age [6,7,24]. In contrast to this statement, Hoffman et al [10], Orhan et al [7], and Yavuz et al [5] detected cases of PAE at 7, 11, and 10 years of age.…”

“…Moreover, less superficially located regions (such as the medial portion of the articular eminence) may only be visible by CT. Among these reports, few studies [6,24] were conducted in the childonly population, and only a single study [24] investigated the correlation between orthodontic malocclusion and PAE. Therefore, data on pneumatization in this region are limited.…”
