“…Studies comparing neoplastic tissues from the cervix [41], larynx [42] and GI tract [43] with the relative controls, have shown a decrease in AF emission in the pathologic samples, due to the alteration of the connective stroma, in particular of collagen and elastic fibres.…”

“…Kraft et al documented that the autofluorescent endoscopy has higher sensitivity, specificity and accuracy than white-light endoscopy in the detection of premalignant and malignant lesions of the larynx [69]. Winiarski et al showed in their study of forty patients that cancerous laryngeal mucosa showed lesser autofluorescent illumination [42], whereas Palasz et al and Zargi et al conducted a study in laryngeal cancer patients, and it showed a similar pattern of autofluorescent loss at the green spectra [70,71]. Additionally, Fostiropoulos et al showed in their study of 152 patients with laryngeal lesions that autofluorescent imaging has a sensitivity of 98% vs. 88% and an accuracy of 97% vs. 90% compared with white-light endoscopy [72].…”

“…magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) [1], computed tomography (CT) [2], ultra sonography (US) [3], bioluminescence [4], fluorescence [5], positron emission tomography (PET) [6], multi-dimensional power-doppler imaging [7], etc …). Each of these imaging techniques shows distinct advantages and limitations to discriminate healthy from tumor tissue areas [8].…”
