Investigation of modified bitumen binders via Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy

Abstract: Objectives. This study evaluates the effect of the modification process on the group composition of bitumen and bitumen binders containing rubber powder and hybrid modifier that is based on styrene–butadiene thermoplastic elastomer and rubber crumb. The aim of the study was to determine the presence or absence of functional groups that reflect the direction of physicochemical processes during the preparation of a hybrid modifier in rotary dispersers and during the modification of bitumen binders. Methods. Rubb… Show more

“…The recycled tire polyester cord is widely used in the production of cement and concrete, both mixed with rubber crumb [5,6] and cleaned [7,8]. The same raw material [9], or only crumb rubber [10], could be used as bitumen modifiers or reinforcement materials for expansive soils [11]. The newest application for recycled tire cord components is 3D printing using polyethylene terephthalate [12] or crumb rubber [13,14].…”

“…Polymer-bitumen binders are structural heterogeneous on a microscopic scale. When a bitumen-polymer mixture is formed, the SBS-polymer swells, absorbing some of the lightest aromatic components of the bitumen, the polymer globules unfold and increase in size by 8-10 times [8,9]. In turn three-dimensional elastic network structure is formed, interpenetrated into the asphaltene framework, which assume the main power loads in the volume of the bituminous binder [10,11].…”
