Investigation of Marine Wind Veer Characteristics Using Wind Lidar Measurements

Abstract: A proper understanding of marine wind characteristics is of essential importance across a wide range of engineering applications. While the offshore wind speed and turbulence characteristics have been examined extensively, the knowledge of wind veer (i.e., turning of wind with height) is much less understood and discussed. This paper presents an investigation of marine wind field with particular emphasis on wind veer characteristics. Extensive observations from a light detection and ranging (Lidar) system at a… Show more

“…Cheung Chau Island and Lantau Island are located off the northwest of the platform, with a distance of, respectively, 9 and 15 km. As Figure 1 shows, the platform is exposed to fairly featureless terrain within the range of 60 • -240 • [13,30,31]. The average water depth around the platform is approximately 20 m. The offshore platform was equipped with a comprehensive wind observation system consisting of a traditional wind mast and a light detection and ranging (lidar) system.…”

“…In the northern hemisphere of the earth, the veering wind which shifts clockwise with height is primarily associated with warm air advection. On the other hand, the backing wind which shifts counter clockwise with height, is usually related to the cold air advection (Ansorge and Wurps, 2022;Eriksson et al, 2019;Shu et al, 2020a).…”

“…Kristoper et.al 14 gained the profiles of the component of wind vector and aerosol/cloud optical properties on a global scale by using a novel atmospheric Lidar Doppler Instruments. Shu et.al 15 studied the marine wind field with particular emphasis on wind veer characteristics by Wind Lidar Measurement (WLM), the variation of wind veer profiles up to a height of 180m was given. Duan et.al 22 used the differential absorption Lidar in the Lintong district to measure the atmosphere concentration of polluting atomic mercury, the average concentrations were recorded and put in relation to weather condition, and vertical concentration profiles were given.…”
