Investigation of Keyes Skin Biopsy Instrument for Intestinal Biopsy Versus a Standard Biopsy Technique

Abstract: A prospective, clinical trial was conducted using 12 dogs that were presented for intestinal biopsy. Comparisons were made between paired jejunal biopsies collected using a Keyes biopsy punch and a standard scissor excisional technique. There were no differences in speed of collection, diagnostic value of specimens, complication rates, or sample quality. In this study, the Keyes skin punch was found to be safe, rapid, and diagnostic in all animals. Based on results of this study, the use of a Keyes punch instr… Show more

“…For intestinal leak testing, we used a jejunal biopsy site created with a 6 mm skin biopsy punch and closed using 3–4 full thickness simple interrupted sutures of 4‐0 polydioxanone. This biopsy method was chosen because it has been previously reported, 19 is used commonly in our hospital, and is reproducible. Targeted intraluminal pressures were achieved during digital and Doyen occlusion.…”

“…Jejunal biopsy was performed in each dog using a disposable 6 mm skin biopsy punch (6 mm biopsy punch, Miltex Inc., York, PA) as described 19 . The site was closed using 3 (n=36) or 4 (n=2) full‐thickness, simple interrupted sutures of 4‐0 polydioxanone placed ∼2 mm apart.…”

“…Stay sutures were placed on the greater curvature of the stomach to maximize its exteriorization, this was not successful in all cases. Intestinal biopsy techniques have been previously detailed elsewhere . Briefly, full‐thickness incisional biopsy samples were harvested from the antimesenteric border of the small intestinal tract with a #11 blade or a 4‐mm punch biopsy instrument, and closed with a simple interrupted or modified Gambee suture pattern with 3‐0 or 4‐0 monofilament absorbable suture.…”
