Investigation of indoor air quality in university libraries in terms of gaseous and particulate pollutants in Bartin, Turkey

Abstract: Indoor air quality (IAQ) was investigated in two libraries of Bartin University. Particle matter, TVOC, and CH 2 O were measured simultaneously in different rooms of the libraries. Measurements were made by PCE-RCM 11 measuring device. They were conducted monthly between September 2019 and October 2020 for 2 weeks for each library. TVOC mean concentration was higher than the limit value reported by Seifert et al. ( 1999 ). PM 2.5 and PM … Show more

“…Concerning NO 2 , average concentrations were approximately five times higher than the maximum levels obtained by Rodriguez et al, 2022 [ 24 ] in Spain. Maximum concentrations measured for TVOCs in classroom 2 were two times higher than the maximum concentration detected in university classrooms in South Africa and in university libraries in Turkey [ 25 , 37 ].…”

“…According to the literature, only a few studies on IAQ in university environments worldwide have been published [ 5 , 23 , 24 , 25 ], and there is a lack of harmonisation in the way IAQ has been assessed. Overall, only CO 2 has been regularly measured as a proxy indicator of IAQ.…”

“…Furthermore, the HQ of male technicians was 1.39‐fold greater than that of female technicians, implying that male technicians were at a higher risk of developing non‐carcinogenic health outcomes. Güneş et al 89 investigated indoor air quality in library universities and found a HQ less than one for students and library staff when using the USEPA equation. In this study, only the HQ for students was less than one when using the USEPA equation.…”

“…The difference in the results might be partly explained by the different methodological approaches. The authors 89 used the limit values for indoor PM 2.5 prescribed by the World Health Organization as the RfC, whereas in this study, the RfC for diesel particulates was used to calculate the RfC for PM 2.5 .…”

“…The investigation of IAQ in Turkey suggested that due to natural ventilation, the IAQ of libraries is influenced by many parameters related to both indoor and outdoor environments. Therefore, mechanical ventilation is more effective for controlling IAQ [23]. Modeling for airborne fungal concentration indicated that indoor environmental parameters such as %RH and PM 2.5 and potential confounders were associated with fungal concentrations in university library rooms [24].…”
