Investigation of ERG Gene Expression in Iranian Patients with Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract: The findings of the current study revealed no association between ERG expression and MS, at least in the Iranian patients studied. However, more in-depth and comprehensive investigations should be included to evaluate the exact relevance of this gene to the development of autoimmune diseases such as MS.

“…The latter offers the possibility of hypothesizing and developing new treatments and identifying diagnostic and prognostic biomarker profiles for neuroinflammation and ND. They could include the assessment of transmigration and activation levels of monocytes, as well as the levels, activation, and quantification of clonotypic cells and their mediators, and the evaluation of expression of NF-kB and other transcriptional factors (i.e., ERG factor) and the related pathways [146,147]. The concomitant assessment of microRNAs and epigenetic factors involved in the regulation of these mechanisms could be additionally helpful.…”

“…ERG (Table 2) is a transcription factor involved in hematopoiesis and endothelial cell development. While its direct role in MS is not yet fully understood, ERG has been implicated in endothelial cell dysfunction and angiogenesis, processes that can contribute to immune cell in ltration and in ammation within the CNS in MS. Further research is needed to uncover the speci c involvement of ERG in MS pathogenesis (53). By investigating the factors associated with early mortality in MS, we aim to provide valuable information to clinicians, researchers, and healthcare providers.…”

“…So far, many efforts have been conducted to study the genetic architecture of MS in different populations like Iran. 4,[12][13][14][15] http://ijnl.tums.ac.ir 04 April However, these attempts have only been able to identify a small proportion of the causes of disease, highlighting the need to assess non-genetic factors as well as the interplay between environmental and genetic factors. In addition, genetic effect alone does not justify the low MS concordance rate between monozygotic twins.…”
