Investigation of Drug Delivery by Iontophoresis in a Surgical Wound Utilizing Microdialysis

Abstract: The four microdialysis probe design was successful in the determination of localized drug penetration in a sutured incision model. Iontophoresis enhanced skin penetration and allowed for site specific delivery when applied to a sutured incision.

“…In the present study microdialysis samples were collected for 5 h after removal of occlusion where as the decrease in IL-6 release was not possible to determine for longer time points. This can be overcome using return awake animal containment system (Holovics et al, 2008) where the microdialysis sampling can be carried out in conscious rats for extended period of time. These experiments are presently being pursued in our laboratory.…”

“…Although the primary applications of microdialysis sampling have been in the area of neuroscience research [1], it has also been extensively employed for other pharmaceutical applications. These include the investigation of the transdermal delivery of drugs [2], tissue pharmacokinetics [3], and regional metabolism of drugs in tissues [4,5]. …”

“…Using this approach, significantly different concentrations of the metabolites of a systemic administration of phenol were measured in the extracellular fluid of the anterior position compared to the other regions, even though the same amount of phenol was detected in each region. In more recent studies, linear probes have been implanted in specific layers of the skin (Holovics et al, 2008), stomach Lunte, 2008a, 2008b), and colon (Thomas, 2014).…”
