Investigation of Anthocyanin Profile of Four Elderberry Species and Interspecific Hybrids

Abstract: A total of 19 different anthocyanins have been detected in four elderberry species and eight hybrids and quantified with the use of HPLC-MS(n). The profile and content levels of anthocyanins varied considerably among the analyzed elderberry species and hybrids. Cyanidin-3-O-sambubioside and cyanidin-3-O-glucoside were the most abundant anthocyanins in Sambucus nigra fruits. On the other hand, the prevalent anthocyanin in S. javanica hybrids was identified as cyanidin-3-(E)-p-coumaroyl-sambubioside-5-glucoside.… Show more

“…In contrast to European elderberries, the same study reported that the major compound in American elderberries was Cy-3- O -gluc (739 mg/100 g FW), followed by Cy-3- O -samb (545 mg/100 g FW). They reported a total amount of anthocyanins (1374 mg/100 g FW) higher than those usually found in Europeans hybrids [13,16,17]. Our quantitative data on total anthocyanins isolated from AEE are consistent with those previously found in Europeans hybrids (495.16 mg/100 g FW) [16,17,18].…”

Our quantitative data on total anthocyanins isolated from AEE are consistent with those previously found in Europeans hybrids (495.16 mg/100 g FW) [16,17,18]. Differences in the total amount or in the ratio between individual anthocyanins reported in these studies could be due to the influence of genetic and environmental factors or to differences in extraction/fractionation procedures.…”

“…2, peak 6). These cyanidins are known to be the most common anthocyanins in elderberry fruit, which is confi rmed by our results and those recently published by others (YOUDIM et al, 2000;LEE & FINN, 2007;DUYMU Ş et al, 2014;MIKULIC-PETKOVSEK et al, 2014). The content of identifi ed anthocyanins, once they appeared, increased rapidly with the stage of ripeness, but after about 6 weeks, the increases slowed down (Fig.…”

“…The authors also concluded that the content and stability of individual phenolic compounds largely depended on the genotype. The importance of genotype has also been highlighted by other authors (e.g., Akbulut et al 2009;Mikulic-Petkovsek et al, 2014.…”
