Investigation of adhesion of PVD coatings using various approaches

Abstract: Three different coatings (TiN, CrN and AlCrN layers) were deposited on an AISI 52000 steel substrate with the physical vapour deposition technique. Adhesion of the coatings was investigated by microindentation, scratch testing and cyclic impact testing. In the microindentation tests, circumferential cracks were observed around the indentations on each coating. The scratch tests revealed the critical forces that accompanied the various types of degradation imposed by scratching. The TiN coating demonstrated the… Show more

“…4 Contrary to CrN coating, the addition of Al in another binary TiN showed an improvement in the mechanical capacity of coatings. However, the mechanical performance obtained is directly related to the deposition conditions, coating compositions, and also coating structures.…”

“…3 Many situations can be envisioned in industrial applications as we have seen in our previous work. 4 In this latter work, we studied three types of coating such as TiN single layer, TiAlN multilayer. and TiN/TiAlN nanomultilayer that belong to this family of titanium based coating.…”

“…8 For the Cr-N coating, the cohesive and the adhesive failure critical loads are in the range of 11.46 and 32.2 N, respectively. These lower values as compared to the adhesion properties of Cr-N film 4,11,27 can be attributed to the presence of a high CrN residual stress film and a soft XC100 substrate.…”

“…These values are in good agreement with those reported for CrN film deposited by different methods. 11,27,28 On the other hand, the Zr-N film exhibits a hardness value of 16.00 ± 0.10 GPa and Young's modulus of 270 ± 23.00 GPa. The ZrN hardness value is comparable to those reported in the literature which range from 15 to 30 GPa for bulk ZrN phase 29 and also in good agreement with that reported for films grown by PVD techniques.…”
